Sony Playstation 3 - The Next Generation in Video Gaming

With a full year lag behind the Xbox 360, Sony's PlayStation 3 comes with some features to put it ahead of the competition. The sleek design houses and internal power supply. At the heart of the PlayStation 3 lies a CPU that will impress even the most hard-core PC gamer. This powerful, multi core Cell processor runs at 3.2 GHz. An RSX Reality Synthesizer graphics engine, based on NVidia's G70 architecture, delivers the graphics. Working alongside these chips are 256MB of high-performance XDR main memory and 256MB of GDDR3 video memory. The Playstation 3 delivers graphics up to 60 frames per second playing games that provide vivid realism.

The new SIXAXIS controller looks familiar with some improvements. It is wireless using Bluetooth technology and can be recharged using the supplied USB cable. It also has a motion sensor measured on six axis to give more feel and control over the game experience.

The Playstation 3 is an entertainment hub complete with a Blue-ray Disc player, the next generation in video technology. In the digital world picture quality depends on bit rates. For example DVD players can deliver 8 megabits per second (Mbps) while Blue-ray Disc deliver up to 48 Mbps at 1080p. Blue-ray Disc Also deliver a superior audio with 7.1 channels of high definition surround sound and up to 32 streams of audio. Blue-ray Disc has a storage capacity up to 50 GB which is 5 times the capacity of today's DVDs. Right now in Europe Blue-ray Discs are outselling HD-DVDs.

To fully experience the console's graphics capabilities you'll have to purchase your own HDMI cable and own an HDCP-compliant 1080p television. Two extras that you might consider buying are Sony's proprietary component video output cable and the optical digital audio cable required for 7.1-channel audio. For optimum Blue-ray or DVD movie playback, you could also spring for the optional $25 remote control.

Playstation 3 is a digital hub to show your favorite images with the photo album slide show, music with the visual player, or home videos. Card slots support CompactFlash type I & II, Microdrive, Secure Digital, miniSD, Memory Stick and Memory Stick PRO Duo flash memory cards.

The PlayStation Network and store is a free service where you can see when friends are online in order to chat with them by video, voice, or text, or to join multi player games. You can down load new games or add-ons to games you already have. The optional PLAYSTATION Eye USB camera with a built in microphone allows you to chat online with video. The PLAYSTATION Eye is also engineered to perform well in low-light conditions and includes a dual action lens for close-up and full body options.

The first models offered for the Playstation 3 were the PS3 20GB which is now discontinued and the PS3 60GB which is being phased out. The new models offered in time for the 2007 holidays are the PS3 40GB that ships with Spiderman 3 Blue-ray movie and PS3 80GB that ships with Motorstorm game. The PS3 20GB is Ethernet only network compatible while the other models support Ethernet and Wi-Fi. The PS3 40GB is not backward compatible with PS1 and PS2 games while the other models are. The PS3 20GB and PS3 40GB models do not have the memory slots. The PS3 40GB has 2 USB ports while the other models have 4 USB ports. All models have an HDMI output.
